\n
\nThis message serves to communicate the outcomes of today's session. At this point, you should have submitted the course signature sheet, and the student info. sheet. If you have not, please do so through fax or email by end of next week. Also, you have created a new wikispace and are beginning to build and add pages and content. If you have not already done so, I urge you to review the online tutorials for basic operations of the wiki. Initially there is a lot going on, but in the coming weeks you will be adding and creating with ease! For session 2, go through the readings and research for the instructional design comparative article. I recommend writing the article in word, and then uploading to your wiki page. If you have not done so already, also check out the archives for sample projects and submitted assignments to get an idea of what previous instructional designers have done.
\n
\nSkype - we did not get a chance to demo skype, but i recommend checking it out at skype.com. create an account and then add others. my skype name is kevin.pyatt. I look forward to working with you. Talk to you soon.

\nI have scheduled a meeting time for Jul 16th 8am-12pm (session 5).
\nI will be available during my office hours this Thursday 8-10am Pacific Time. Let me know if there are any questions.

\n
\nI received your email by mistake. I was also a student Dr Pyatt Spring Quarter 2008. I believe that he is using several student's wikispaces as examples. I am not a teacher. As a result, I had to put in some long hours to accomplish my ISD model. I gained a lot of knowledge, but I lack the wisdom that Dr Pyatt will be able to provide. However, I remember how difficult the first two weeks of ed 533 class was. So, I put together some very amateuristic thoughts on system designs specifically UBD and ADDIE and Dick and Carey (2005). Remember, you need to contact Dr Pyatt because he owns the expertise that you need!
\n
\n
\nA TAXONOMY OF ID MODELS
\n
\nThe Dick and Carey model and the ADDIE model describes all the phases of an iterative process that starts by identifying instructional goals and ends with summative evaluation. It is a front
\n-end process that begins with identifion of a need or a gap and ends with a process to close that gap. Yes! there is some similiarities between the ADDIE model and the UBD model. The distinction is the process. Most often ADDIE is a linear process that begins with analysis and ends with design evaluation while UBD is more of a circular process.
\n
\nAnother important distinction between the two processes: The UBD model, Unlike many instructional design models, is well suited for the academic community because it has the capabilities to allow the performance tech to use both a "backwards design," and a "front-end approach" used in ADDIE models. As I was developing our design for educ 533, I read several web sites that used the Wiggins and McTighe UBD model.
\n
\nI found that many of these web-sites neglected to mention the ADDIE Model because the conceptual framework for instructional designers using this type of design model are not the same process. The ADDIE Model is great for novice techs who are learning the ISD process because it is a linear process of steps. Equally true, ADDIE is a Large-scale model like many other ISD Models. Large-scale models or programs are usually more elaborate and critical. These programs often require detailed analyses before any design and development phases take place. Large-scale programs also require more control and tracking over the various components. Models that integrate all components of Analysis, Design, and Learning are more efficient, rigid, and expensive to implement.
\n
\nSmall-scale programs like UBD, there is often more flexibility and creativity in all components. Some of the component tasks may also be excluded depending on the program goals and restraints. The design and development phase may sometimes, although rarely, take place simultaneously with analyses.
\n
\nIn regards to UBD's Backwards Design:
\n
\nThe backwards design model centers on the idea that the design process should begin with identifying the desired results and then "work backwards" to develop instruction rather than the traditional approach which is to define what topics need to be covered. Their framework identifies three main stages:
\n
\nStage 1: Identify desired outcomes and results.
\n
\nStage 2: Determine what constitutes acceptable evidence of competency in the outcomes and results (assessment).
\n
\nStage 3: Plan instructional strategies and learning experiences that bring students to these competency levels.
\n
\nIn all cases of Instructional Systems Design process, formative evaluation should be a component that occurs throughout the projects timeline. Strategies for evaluation and assessment are useful for identifying problems and discovering new opportunities before the instruction is implemented.
\nA number of recipes and ingredients are available from the menu of instructional design. No single recipe is best or appropriate for all situations. When in doubt, follow those procedures that are sequential and linear in form. When possible, consult models or procedures and improve upon them with fresh approaches that are more appropriate to your given problem situation.
\n
\nFinally, report on your approaches and the success of your innovations. There is always room for another item on the menu. I believe that you will be able to find additional info by searching
\nfor either: the "backwards design" instructional design model or the "Six Facets of Understanding."
\n
\nHere's my taxonomy I used for ed 533 - this is an extrapolation from other sources on the web.
\nThere are enough differences among ID models that there is some value in creating a taxonomy for classifying them:
\n1. Gustafson (1981, 1991). Gustafson's schema is based on the set of assumptions each author of an ID model has made, often implicitly, about the conditions under which both the development and delivery of instruction will occur.
\n
\n2. Gerlach and Ely (1980) and Heinich et al. (1996) clearly focus their models on classroom teachers working alone as both the designers and deliverers of any instruction developed.
\nConversely, Bergman and Moore's (1990) model clearly focuses on developing instructional products by a team including instructional developers, multimedia production staff, computer programmers, and a project manager, none of whom are expected to have any role in the product's implementation or use.
\n
\n3. ADDIE, Dick and Carey (1996), Smith and Ragan (1993), and Gagne et al. (1992) present ID models that appear intended for use in a variety of settings. However, it seems most likely they will be used by a skilled development team to develop a complex "system" of instruction to meet specified organizational needs or goals.
\n
\n4. Similarly, the military model published by Branson (1975) and the education-oriented IDI model (National Special Media Institute, 1971) assume a large-scale, team-oriented development effort.
\n
\nI hope that this answers your question. Sorry about the broken thoughts and mis-spellings...
